There are two main types of carpet: carpets made from wool and carpets made from manmade fibres. It is generally recognised that an 80:20 carpet (80% wool, 20% nylon) is a good carpet. However, it is not quite as simple as that, as the quality of the carpet depends on what type of wool is being used.
