7. Opt for a made-to-measure carpet
The price of your carpet will vary considerably depending on its material. Typically natural-based materials such as wool and silk are more expensive. High-grade wool is one of the most expensive carpet materials, with prices for 100% wool carpets ranging from around £28 per square metre to more than £100 for a branded one. Polypropylene is one of the least expensive options, with prices starting from as little as £6 per square metre. If you know the measurements of your room, use our carpet calculator to get an initial cost estimate (this does not include fitting costs or any extras).
Armed with the measurements and shane’s tips, i headed off to my local united carpets & beds store to pick up some more tips and select my new carpet. Our local branch has hundreds of carpets to choose from at prices to suit every budget. They don’t just sell carpets, either. They offer other flooring options, including laminate, vinyl, rugs and artificial grass. Plus, if you’re planning a cost-effective home renovation, they also sell beds, mattresses and accessories. Before being tempted to rush into choosing a carpet based on colour and texture again, i decided to see what other tips i could pick up from shaun, the store manager.
8. Look for quality with a woven carpet
Woolen carpets are a popular flooring choice because they are extremely durable, high quality, and have a softness that synthetic materials cannot replicate. The textured carpet pictured above is astoni windsor wool, woven in italy. You can purchase it from astoni windsor here from choices flooring. For more about the benefits of wool carpets, see here.
There are two main types of carpet: carpets made from wool and carpets made from manmade fibres. It is generally recognised that an 80:20 carpet (80% wool, 20% nylon) is a good carpet. However, it is not quite as simple as that, as the quality of the carpet depends on what type of wool is being used. Is it new wool, perhaps even merino sheep wool, brand new off the back of a sheep, which is renowned for making good quality carpet? or is it something like a former dog’s blanket that has been re-spun and woven into a carpet? both of these options could be the wool content of an 80:20 carpet, but one is brand new wool, whereas the other is much poorer quality wool.
As paradiso says on their website, they’re not interested in selling a label. Rather, their top-selling feature is quality. Overall, paradiso sells 48 collections of luxury carpet. And like we mentioned, all of these collections are woven (not tufted/glued), and half are woven by hand. Very few carpet manufacturers make anything by hand anymore, so this is quite rare. This company’s collections come in all the most popular luxury fiber options—mostly wool and wool blends, but some high-end polysilk, polypropylene, other blends as well. Every paradiso carpet is cri green label plus-certified as low-voc, and around a quarter of all their products can be recycled.
